Bell

Bell post office, 9.5 km west south west of Bell, was opened on 8 September 1877 as Maida Hill and was renamed Bell in 1898. In 1904 it moved 3 km north east of Bell. On 26 June 1907 this post office was renamed Malakoff because a new post office called Bell Railway Station had opened at the adjoining railway station in late 1906 and the similar name was causing confusion. Following the original Bell post office being renamed Malakoff, the new Bell Railway Station post office name was then changed back to Bell on 26 July 1907 but the date stamp remained Bell R.S.

Thus although over time there were two separate Bell post offices, for convenience I have grouped them together. The original post office (operating under this name from 1898 to June 1907) had type 4 date stamps with the name on the date stamp being Bell, and the later post office (open from late 1906 onwards) had a type 5 with the name on the date stamp being Bell R.S. for Bell Railway Station
