Broughton post office, a gold mining area 19 km east of Charters Towers, opened on 1 April 1872 before closing two months later, on 4 June 1872. In 1879 there was a small rush back to the area which saw the post office reopen on 1 November 1880 before being reduced to a receiving office in 1897
