Thornborough post office, 45 km west of Mareeba opened on 14 June 1876 as Thornsborough. It appears that the variant name was due to a spelling error when the post office was gazetted in the Queensland Government Gazette. The mistake was officially corrected in November 1885 when the post office was renamed Thornborough, however the existing Thornsborough date stamp continued to be used
